Dialysis is a treatment used for people with kidney failure. It helps by doing some of the work that healthy kidneys normally do, like filtering waste from the blood. This treatment is used until the kidneys can start working again or until a kidney transplant is possible.
During dialysis, two small needles are placed in the arm. One needle takes the blood out and sends it through a filter that removes waste and extra fluid. The clean blood is then returned to the body through the other needle.
A typical dialysis session lasts about four hours and is usually done three times a week.
