Dr. Mark C. Callanan, MD, discusses youth sports injuries and prevention on KTBS Healthline 3

July 20, 2025

Youth sports injuries are epidemic. An estimated 30% of youth have a serious injury at least once during their school athletic career. The good news is that an estimated 50% of these serious injuries can be prevented.

Speaking of prevention, many local schools participate in Willis Knighton’s Sports Medicine program, where they can participate in our annual sports physical day with screenings for risk factors that can lead to injury. Screenings range from risk factors for cardiac arrest events, asthma or other acute conditions, to risk factors for ACL tears that are common and could mean the end of your child’s sports career. Listen for more tips for injury prevention in this video segment.

Dr. Callanan is director of sports medicine at Willis Knighton Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Pierremont.
