Partial Knee Replacement

Overview

This surgery fixes damage in your knee. It replaces only the damaged parts of your joint, leaving the healthy areas intact. It lets your knee move naturally again.

Preparation

To begin, you're put to sleep. The surgeon makes an incision in your knee. Your kneecap is moved aside to expose your joint.

Implant

The surgeon removes bad bone and tissue from the femur and tibia. The ends of these bones are shaped to make space for the metal implants. Then, the implants are pressed into place and secured. A spacer is put between them. The surgeon tests your knee to make sure the implants fit together perfectly and will glide smoothly as you walk. Finally, your incision is closed and bandaged.

End of procedure

After the surgery, you're watched in a recovery room as you wake up. Your surgeon will tell you when you can go home. Follow your surgeon's advice for a safe recovery.
