Depending on the type and stage of your cancer, surgery may be an important part of your treatment plan. Cancer resection, or surgical removal of cancerous tissue, is performed with precision and care to reduce the likelihood of disease spread.
Common Cancer Resection Procedures
- Mastectomy – Removal of one or both breasts to prevent or treat breast cancer
- Prostatectomy – Removal of the prostate gland
- Skin lesion removal – Removal of cancerous or precancerous skin growths
- Small bowel resection – Removal of a portion of the small intestine
- Gastrectomy – Partial or full removal of the stomach
- Thoracotomy – Remove lung tumors or lymph nodes
- Adrenalectomy – Removal of one or both adrenal glands
- Appendectomy – Removal of the appendix, often due to tumor or obstruction
- Colectomy (colorectal resection) - Removal of part of all of the colon
- Oophorectomy – Removal of one or both ovaries
- Thyroidectomy – Removal of part of all the thyroid gland
- Hysterectomy – Removal of the uterus
- Glossectomy – Removal of part or all the tongue, often due to oral cancer
- Colon polypectomy – Removal of cancerous or precancerous polyps
