Early Detection and Prevention

Willis Knighton Health and American Cancer Society (ACS) make a powerful team. ACS provides many education materials and screening guidelines to help you detect cancer early when treatment can be more successful.

• Smoke-Free City Ordinances
  We're working to strengthen the smoke-free policies within our cities. This is just one way we can decrease cancer deaths due to secondhand smoke.

• Research
  ACS is the largest source of funding for cancer research, boasting 49 Nobel Prize winners. The agency’s research influences standards for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplants, mammogram, Pap test and PSA test. ACS research includes discoveries related to DNA structure the medications Tamoxifen and Gleevec.
  
• Advocacy
  Thank ACS for the Clean Indoor Air Law in Louisiana, insurance companies covering the cost of cancer screenings, restrictive advertising for tobacco companies, warning labels on cigarettes and no smoking on airplanes.

• Reach To Recovery
  Volunteer breast cancer survivors call women who are newly diagnosed or have just had surgery to offer educational materials, services and hope.
• Cancer Survivors Network
  A web-based support service for cancer survivors and their families, caregivers and friends.
• Road to Recovery
  Volunteer drivers provide cancer patients across Shreveport-Bossier City with transportation to ensure they receive life-saving treatments.
• Hope Lodge
  A free, nurturing home away from home for cancer patients and caregivers who must travel to treatment. Hope Lodge has 31 locations throughout the U.S. American Cancer Society has 32 additional Hope Lodge locations.
• Tender Loving Care (TLC)
  Women get help with appearance-related side effects through affordable wigs, hats and scarves, as well as a full range of mastectomy products. Purchase items from the privacy of your own home by calling 1-800-850-9445 or visiting the “TLC” website at tlcdirect.org.
