How to Schedule a Sleep Study

To get started, make an appointment with your primary care doctor to talk about your sleep concerns. If your doctor recommends a sleep study, ask them to send a referral to the Willis Knighton sleep lab that’s most convenient for you. Our sleep lab team will reach out to you to schedule your appointment. We're here to make the process easy and help you get the rest you deserve.

How to Prepare for Your Sleep Study

Take all medications prescribed by your doctor and any over-the-counter medications that you may take. Make sure to bring a list of all medications.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine on the day/evening of your study.
Bring loose, comfortable clothes. Pillows are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish.
Come with clean hair: No oils, sprays or gels.
Eat your evening meal before you arrive for your appointment. If you have a medical condition that requires a snack before bedtime, please bring that with you.
There may be a short period before the tech applies electrodes. Please feel free to watch TV or read a book during this time.
Insurance co-pay is due before your sleep study.

What to Expect

Staying overnight in one of our facilities includes a stay in a private room with a bathroom and television. The room is set up like a standard bedroom. You’ll arrive at 8 p.m. and are generally discharged at 6 a.m. If you wish to wake up earlier, you’re certainly welcome.

You’ll be monitored by electrodes on your face and scalp. A small belt-like strap is wrapped around your chest, abdomen and legs to monitor breathing and leg movement. An oximeter will be placed on your finger to monitor the oxygen level in your blood. A sleep technician continuously monitors you with audio and video during the entire course of your study.

Getting Your Results

Once a sleep study is complete, a scoring technologist will review the test and the results will be sent to your doctor. A specialist will interpret your results and make a diagnosis. It usually takes about 7 to 10 days to score and receive results.
