Our Technology
Mammography
Mammography is recommended when a patient age 30 or older has symptoms or an abnormality is discovered during an annual exam.
Breast tomosynthesis is an advanced 3D mammogram that offers superior cancer detection and fewer callbacks, which means less stress and more peace of mind. The good news is there’s no additional compression and it takes only a second or two longer than a traditional mammogram. All screening mammograms at Willis Knighton centers use breast tomosynthesis.
MRI – Magnetic Resonance Imaging
MRI is recommended for patients who have a 20 percent or greater lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Speak with your doctor to determine your risk, especially if you have a strong family history of breast cancer.
This highly sensitive technology uses powerful magnets and radio waves and involves the use of a dye to help the radiologist identify any abnormalities in your breast tissue.
An MRI is generally performed after a biopsy is positive for breast cancer and the doctor requests more information about the extent of the disease. It is sometimes used to analyze nipple discharge or if there is a potential problem with breast implants.
Breast Ultrasound – Sonogram
Using sound waves, black-and-white images are created as a wand moves back and forth over your breast. It is used to identify and analyze breast abnormalities and is the first line of evaluation in a patient younger than 30 who exhibits symptoms.
