Radiation Oncology
Radiation oncology uses high-energy radiation to target and kill cancer cells. It works by disrupting the ability of cancer cells to divide and survive. Cancer cells are normally more sensitive to radiation than healthy cells, so fewer healthy cells are damaged during the process. Because healthy cells cannot tolerate large doses of radiation, treatments are usually spread out over five to eight weeks. This provides enough radiation to kill the cancer cells but allows enough time for healthy cells to recover from the radiation.
The Willis Knighton Advantage
Willis Knighton Health’s radiation oncology department is one of the nation’s leading centers for radiation therapy. Our department is one of only a handful of nationwide accredited by both the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) - a testament to our commitment to quality care.
We offer radiation therapy services that other local centers simply cannot provide:
- Board-certified medical physicists
- Nuclear oncology
- Proton therapy
- TomoTherapy
- Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)
- Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)
- Y-90 brachytherapy
