Our Team

Hsinshun Terry Wu, PhD, DABR, DABMP, oversees all medical physics operations and radiation safety in cancer treatment as chief physicist and radiation safety officer at Willis Knighton Cancer Center. He earned his PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1992. Dr. Wu is board certified in Therapeutic Radiological Physics by the American Board of Radiology and in Radiation Oncology Physics by the American Board of Medical Physics.

Prior to joining Willis Knighton, Dr. Wu was a clinical medical physicist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was responsible for the radiosurgery program in the Department of Radiation Oncology. In 1997, Dr. Wu was invited by Dr. Lane R. Rosen to relocate to Shreveport. Together, they proposed starting Willis Knighton Cancer Center, with Dr. Wu serving as the project leader.

From the planning stages onward, Dr. Wu played a central role in the implementation of advanced radiation therapy technologies, including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), and brachytherapy. He collaborated closely with equipment vendors to ensure all technical systems met the clinical and operational needs of the center. Dr. Wu also led the clinical implementation of the world’s first compact proton therapy system, overseeing its commissioning and adaptation into routine clinical use.

Dr. Wu is also deeply committed to education and training. He established the first accredited medical physics residency training program at Willis Knighton Health and served as its program director from July 2011 to October 2016. He remains actively involved in the education of residents, fellows and students.

In addition to his educational efforts, Dr. Wu maintains a strong interest in both clinical and scientific research. He and his colleagues are published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. Notably, one of their articles received the George Starkschall Award of Excellence for Outstanding Radiation Oncology Physics Article in July 2019.

Joseph P. Dugas, PhD, DABR, FAAPM, is a medical physicist and director of the medical physics residency program at Willis Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. Primarily involved in clinical practice, Dr. Dugas is active in several research projects focusing on stereotactic radiosurgery and proton therapy.

Leadership roles for the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) include:

On the regional level, Dr. Dugas is

• Former president of the Southwest Regional Chapter of the AAPM (SWAAPM)

• Frequent SWAAPM mock oral examiner

In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Dugas is enthusiastically engaged in medical physics residency training and leadership at both the local and national level:

• Former vice-chair of the Work Group on Periodic Review of Medical Physics Residency Training for the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM)
• Co-author of AAPM Task Group No. 249.B—Essentials and Guidelines for Clinical Medical Physics Residency Training Programs
• Medical physics residency program reviewer for the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP).

Holding an adjunct faculty appointment at Louisiana Tech University, Dr. Dugas is the course director for a unique educational collaboration that introduces medical physics to undergraduate students. Dr. Dugas also holds an adjunct appointment at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans.

A Louisiana native and LSU alumnus (B.S. 1997), he received his PhD in Physics from Washington University in St. Louis (2003) and completed a clinical medical physics residency at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas (2011). In recognition of his contributions to the field of medical physics, Dr. Dugas was elected as a Fellow of the AAPM in 2025.

A native of Louisiana, Bethany Broekhoven, MS, DABR, is from the New Orleans area. Wanting to stay close to home, Broekhoven received her undergraduate degree in physics with a concentration in astronomy and minor in mathematics from Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge.

Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Broekhoven was a research specialist in the high energy particle physics laboratory at LSU, working on an international project titled CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET). CALET is a cosmic ray observatory on the International Space Station, developed by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency with contributions from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Italian Space Agency. Broekhoven was also the education curator for LaSPACE at LSU. She supervised and coordinated all Mobile Astronomy Resource System (MARS) truck events, educational outreach for students in grades K-12 and the public.

After three years at LSU’s high energy particle physics laboratory, Broekhoven pursued a graduate degree in medical physics from LSU. She graduated with a master’s degree in 2019 and then completed a medical physics residency program at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Wanting to be closer to family after finishing her residency, Broekhoven accepted a position as a staff medical physicist at Willis Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. She participates in patient care through treatments such as:

• Volumetric modulated arc therapy
• Stereotactic body radiation therapy
• Stereotactic radiosurgery
• High dose rate brachytherapy
• Electron radiation therapy
• Proton radiation therapy

Broekhoven volunteers in the local chapter of her professional organization, Southwest Regional Chapter of American Association of Physicists in Medicine SWAAPM:

• Examiner for SWAAMP's ABR part 3 mock oral exams
• Moderator for the annual chapter meetings
• Starting in 2025, Broekhoven is serving three years on SWAAPM’s executive board as president-elect, president, and past president.  

Chief of Radiation Physics Research Yohan Walter, MS, DABR, is a clinical medical physicist certified by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Medical Physics (2025). Yohan provides coverage for the Department of Radiation Oncology, Proton Therapy Center and Nuclear Oncology at the Willis Knighton Cancer Center.

Yohan’s broad clinical and research interests in radiation medicine include stereotactic radiosurgery, proton therapy, theranostics and radiation therapy for benign conditions. Through clinical research, his goal is to generate actionable insights for quality improvement in radiation medicine. Additionally, Walter is an active peer reviewer for several international journals, including Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, BMC Cancer, BMC Neurology, and Scientific Reports.

Yohan earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon (2019), Master of Science from Creighton University (2022), and completed his therapeutic medical physics residency training at Willis Knighton Cancer Center in 2024, where he has remained ever since. While working, Yohan is a student in the clinical research PhD program at the University of Jamestown. Outside of work and school, he enjoys tending to his five Carolina reaper plants (with gloves on).
