Education 

Louisiana Tech University; LSU School of Medicine, New Orleans.  Internship LSU School of Medicine, Shreveport.  Residency in General Surgery Eastern Virginia School of Medicine.  Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Eastern Virginia School of Medicine.  After completing two years in the United States Army and his training, he returned to Shreveport in 1978 to practice medicine.

Expertise 

A board certified (American Board of Surgery) phlebologist, Dr. Barrett has spent the last 25 years focusing primarily on the diagnosis and treatment of lymphatic and venous disease.

Syed Mehmood, MD, performs open heart surgery as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at Willis-Knighton Health System with Red River Cardiovascular Surgeons.   

Dr. Mehmood is one of very few surgeons in Shreveport-Bossier City who have experience in the specialized surgeries he has performed at leading medical centers across the United States. After a residency in general surgery at Wayne State University, Detroit Medical Center, Dr. Mehmood completed a fellowship in thoracic surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center and a second fellowship in cardiac surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. 

He performs video assisted thoracic and vascular surgery, and is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. 

Dr. Mehmood appreciates both the art and science of repairing and rebuilding the heart, arteries and veins.  He combines his medical and surgical training with years of experience to help people’s hearts work well.
